A good Maths home tutor in Pune does two jobs: finds the exact point where your child's understanding broke, and rebuilds from there at your child's pace. Below is where children usually get stuck from Class 1 to 12, how Maths differs across boards, and what to look for before you choose a tutor.
Where children get stuck in Maths, class by class
Maths is cumulative. A Class 9 student who freezes at algebra often has a gap from Class 6 or 7, and fixing only the Class 9 chapter won't hold. These are the usual pressure points:
| Stage | What usually gets hard | What a tutor should focus on |
|---|---|---|
| Class 1-5 | Place value, carrying and borrowing, times tables, word problems | Objects and pictures, number sense, reading the question slowly |
| Class 6-8 | Fractions and decimals, negative numbers (integers), the first algebra with letters | Visual models, short daily practice, no skipped steps |
| Class 9 | The jump to formal algebra and geometry proofs | Writing proofs line by line, factorising fluently |
| Class 10 | Board-exam pace: quadratics, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, statistics | Timed papers, neat working, learning from mistakes |
| Class 11 | Functions, trigonometry and a first look at calculus | Secure algebra first, then the new ideas |
| Class 12 | Calculus, vectors and 3D geometry, probability | Daily problem practice, especially integration |
In CBSE's 2026-27 Class 12 syllabus, calculus alone carries 35 of the 80 theory marks, so a weak Class 11 base shows up fast. If your child is younger and already losing confidence, our guide on what to do when your child is weak in Maths explains how to find the real gap.
How Maths differs by board
The topics overlap, but the books, papers and expectations differ. Tell any tutor your child's exact board and course before the first session.
- CBSE: NCERT textbooks. Class 10 students in 2026-27 can still choose Mathematics Standard or Basic, which share a syllabus but have different question papers. Class 9 has a redesigned syllabus from 2026-27 that brings sequences and progressions into Class 9, plus an optional Maths Advanced paper that CBSE plans to examine in Class 10 from 2027-28, with marks kept out of the overall total.
- Maharashtra State Board (SSC): Class 9 and 10 Maths is split into Part 1 (Algebra) and Part 2 (Geometry), each with its own Balbharati textbook, and in the Class 10 SSC exam they are separate papers on different days. In Pune's semi-English schools, Maths is taught in English while your child may still think in Marathi.
- ICSE and ISC: a separate syllabus with its own textbooks that doesn't line up chapter for chapter with NCERT, so a tutor should work from your child's school books and past ICSE papers.
- IGCSE (Cambridge 0580): Core students sit Papers 1 and 3 and can achieve grades C to G; Extended students sit Papers 2 and 4 for A* to E. In each tier one paper is non-calculator, so written methods matter.
- IB: MYP Maths in the middle years, then in the Diploma Programme a choice of Analysis and Approaches or Applications and Interpretation, each at standard or higher level.
What to look for in a Maths home tutor
- Asks to see your child's school notebook and last test paper before teaching anything
- Starts with a short diagnostic to find gaps from earlier classes, not just this chapter
- Makes your child solve while they watch, not the other way round
- Knows your board's paper pattern: Standard or Basic, Algebra and Geometry, Core or Extended, SL or HL
- Has taught your child's class recently, which matters most in Class 11 and 12
- Can explain in Marathi or Hindi if your child is in a semi-English school and needs it
- Tells you plainly, every few weeks, what is improving and what isn't
A demo class is the easiest way to judge most of this. Watch who does the talking and who holds the pencil.
How Maths tuition sessions usually run
For Class 1 to 5, two or three sessions a week of 45 minutes to an hour is usually enough; younger children tire quickly. From Class 9, three sessions a week of about an hour gives room to cover school work and old gaps, with more time in the months before board exams.
A sensible session has a quick recap of what school covered, one new idea or weak topic, then problems your child solves alone. Homework should be short and daily rather than one long sheet a week, because Maths sticks through frequent practice. Every two or three weeks, a timed test shows whether the work is holding, and a running list of repeated mistakes is often more useful than the marks.
When to start Maths home tuition
Start at the first signs: a drop in unit-test marks, homework avoided or rushed, or “I understood it in class” followed by a blank page. Waiting for the half-yearly result usually means a whole term's gap to fill.
For Class 10, the start of the session is far better than after the prelims. CBSE Class 10 now has a main board exam that every student sits and an optional second exam to improve up to three subjects, which can include Maths; in 2026 they began on 17 February and 15 May. Class 11 and 12 Maths, JEE and MHT-CET
Class 11 and 12 Maths is the base for JEE Main and for the PCM group of MHT-CET. TutorUp is for school tuition, not entrance coaching: a home tutor keeps your child's board Maths strong and fills gaps, which entrance preparation builds on. If your child also has an entrance exam in mind, agree with the tutor how sessions fit around it. Our guide to Class 12 boards and entrance exams explains how families balance the two.
Finding a Maths tutor near you in Pune
Post a requirement with the board, class, course (Standard or Basic, Core or Extended, SL or HL), the chapters that worry you and two or three evening slots that work.
