An ICSE home tutor in Pune has to handle the two things the board is known for: a lot of written English, and a wide syllabus with projects running alongside the exams. The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) runs the ICSE exam at the end of Class 10 and the ISC exam at the end of Class 12. Pune's ICSE schools range from long-established schools around the Cantonment to newer ones in the growing suburbs, so look for a tutor who is at ease with long, structured answers.
How the ICSE exam is structured
ICSE candidates take between six and eight subjects, arranged in three groups:
- Group I (compulsory): English, a second language, and History, Civics and Geography, which is examined as two papers: History and Civics, and Geography.
- Group II: two subjects, commonly Mathematics and Science. Science is examined as three separate papers: Physics, Chemistry and Biology.
- Group III: one subject such as Computer Applications, Economic Applications, Art or Physical Education.
In Groups I and II, each subject is marked out of 80 for the written paper plus 20 for internal assessment, usually project work set and marked by the school. Group III subjects are weighted half and half between the paper and internal work. English is examined in two full papers, English Language and Literature in English. ICSE and ISC papers usually start in February and run through March, and the ISC timetable can stretch into early April; check CISCE's latest circular for the 2027 dates.
ISC in Classes 11 and 12
ISC is a two-year course ending in the Class 12 exam. English stays compulsory, and students choose their other subjects within a stream such as science, commerce or humanities. Most ISC subjects pair a written paper with practical or project work, so the year has deadlines well before the exam season.
ISC students sit JEE, NEET and MHT-CET like students from any other recognised board. MHT-CET is set on the Maharashtra state syllabus, and JEE Main and NEET broadly follow the NCERT curriculum, so a good ISC science tutor knows where the ISC course overlaps with those and where it does not. Our guide to balancing Class 12 boards and entrance exams covers the planning.
Where ICSE students most often need help
- English. Composition, letters and email writing, comprehension, grammar, and the prescribed play and anthology. Literature answers need evidence from the text rather than a retelling of the story. Our English tuition page goes into the papers in more detail.
- Volume. History and Civics, Geography and three science papers add up to a lot of content. Children who do well usually revise in small, regular pieces rather than in a rush before exams.
- Long written answers in every subject. ICSE rewards complete, well-organised answers, in Geography and Biology as much as in English.
- Projects. With internal assessment in most subjects, project deadlines can pile up in the same weeks as unit tests.
- The step to ISC. Class 11 science and commerce subjects go much deeper than ICSE, and the first term can be a shock.
What good ICSE tuition looks like
Good ICSE tuition is built around writing. Expect your child to write something in most sessions, and expect the tutor to mark it closely: structure, accuracy, use of the right terms and whether the answer actually responds to the question. For literature, the tutor should read difficult scenes aloud with your child and practise extract questions until quoting from the text becomes a habit.
A tutor should also help plan the year. A simple calendar of unit tests, project deadlines and revision weeks stops the crunch that ICSE students often hit in Class 9 and Class 10. In the run-up to the board exam, they should work from CISCE's specimen papers and the school's past prelim papers, timed.
How to choose an ICSE or ISC tutor in Pune
- They have taught ICSE or ISC in the last two years and know this year's prescribed texts and paper pattern.
- Their own written English is strong, because they will be marking your child's writing in every subject.
- For ISC, they specialise in the subject, for example physics or accountancy, rather than covering everything.
- They will look at project drafts without taking them over.
- They can show you how they mark: ask them to correct a recent answer of your child's in front of you.
- They live close enough to come reliably on weekday evenings.
When you post a requirement on TutorUp, choose ICSE as the board, pick the class and subjects, and add your child's school, so verified tutors near your home who apply know exactly which syllabus they are signing up for. Verification is an identity check by a person on our team, on a short call or from a photo ID and a selfie. It is not a police or background check and not a judgement of teaching quality, so read how verification works and meet the tutor first. Living in East or South-East Pune? Our Kalyani Nagar and Koregaon Park and Kondhwa and NIBM Road pages name the ICSE schools nearby and cover local travel times.
