Home tuition means the tutor comes to your home and teaches your child one to one, or siblings together, usually a few evenings a week, for a fee you agree directly. Here is how home tuition in Pune works today, and exactly what TutorUp does and doesn't do.
How Pune families find a home tutor today
There are four common routes, and many parents try more than one.
| Route | What it does well | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition agencies and bureaus | Quick introductions; some offer a replacement if a tutor leaves | Often charge for the introduction, to the parent, the tutor or both; you may know little about the tutor before the first class |
| Word of mouth (school parents, society WhatsApp groups) | A tutor someone you know has actually seen teach | Choice is limited to whoever your circle knows, and it can feel awkward to stop if it isn't working |
| Listing sites and classifieds | Wide choice, often with fees shown | How much each site checks profiles varies, so much of the vetting falls to you |
| A verified marketplace such as TutorUp | Every tutor checked by a person, the nearest shown first, fees agreed directly with the tutor | The check confirms identity, not teaching quality or background; how many tutors you see depends on how many have joined near you |
None of these replaces meeting the tutor and watching a demo class. If you're still weighing a home tutor against a coaching class, our guide to home tuition vs coaching classes sets out the trade-offs.
What's different about home tuition in Pune and PCMC
Two cities, one search
Most of urban Pune falls under two municipal corporations side by side. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) covers the old city and suburbs from Kothrud to Kharadi; the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to the north-west takes in Pimpri, Chinchwad, Nigdi, Wakad, Pimple Saudagar and Ravet. TutorUp works across both.
For a tutor search, the route matters more than the boundary. Along much of their shared edge the Mula river separates the two, so for a family in Wakad or Sangvi the nearest suitable tutor may well live in Baner or Aundh, and the other way round.
A mix of boards across the city
Maharashtra State Board schools, in English, Marathi and semi-English medium, are found all over Pune, alongside many CBSE and ICSE schools. IB and Cambridge IGCSE are taught in a much smaller group of international schools, so check that a tutor has taught that programme itself. Either way, tell tutors the board, not just the class: Class 8 Maths on the State Board and on ICSE are different books with different expectations, and our guide to how CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE, IB and State Board compare explains the differences.
The 4 to 9 pm window
Most families want tuition after school, roughly between 4 pm and 9 pm on weekdays. Those are also the hours when main roads such as Nagar Road, Solapur Road and the routes into Hinjewadi are often heavily congested, so tutors try to keep an evening's students along one route. If you can offer an earlier slot, a later one or weekend mornings, say so in your requirement.
How far tutors travel
Many home tutors ride a two-wheeler and keep their students within a short ride, often a few kilometres. Distance on a map isn't the whole story: a river bridge, a railway crossing or a hill like Vetal Tekdi can turn a short hop into a long evening ride. Ask a tutor which way they would come and how long it takes at your slot, not at noon. A tutor who lives near a metro station may not need to ride at all.
Gated societies and gate passes
In large societies, a tutor can be held at the gate every evening unless you have pre-approved them. Visitor apps used in many Pune societies, such as MyGate and NoBrokerHood, let you pre-approve a regular visitor. Inside the flat, a dining table in a shared room usually works better than a closed bedroom, for focus and for peace of mind.
How to choose a home tutor in Pune
Start with what your child needs: one weak subject before the Class 10 boards is a different job from all-subject help in Class 3. Then check each tutor against this list:
- Board and class. Have they taught your child's board at this level recently?
- Language. If your child studies in Marathi or semi-English medium, can the tutor explain in Marathi when needed while getting your child to answer in English?
- Route and slot. Can they reach you at your time, every week, through evening traffic?
- Demo class. Watch how they explain, and whether your child asks questions.
- A plan. What will they cover in the first month, and how will they tell you how it's going?
- Terms. Fee, days, holidays, missed classes and notice period, agreed before the first class.
Our guide on how to choose a home tutor walks through each step, and questions to ask a home tutor gives you a list to take to the first meeting.
What home tuition costs in Pune
Home tuition fees in Pune vary widely. A tutor's fee mostly depends on your child's class and board, the subjects, how many days a week they come, their experience and how far they travel. Senior classes, board-exam years and IB or IGCSE tutoring usually cost more.
On TutorUp, each tutor shows their own fee on their profile, and you can add your budget to your requirement so applicants know what you have in mind. For indicative, publicly listed rates by class and the payment norms worth agreeing up front, read our guide to home tuition fees in Pune.
How TutorUp verifies tutors, and what that means
Before a tutor's profile is visible to families, a person on the TutorUp team checks them, either on a short call or by reviewing a photo ID and a selfie by hand. That confirms the tutor is who they say they are and that the profile is theirs.
It is not a police verification, a criminal-record or background check, or a judgement on how well someone teaches. Meet the tutor yourself before classes begin, watch a demo, and for a young child make sure an adult is at home during sessions. How TutorUp verification works explains the check in full, and our home tutor safety checklist covers the rest.
On TutorUp, only a parent a tutor has been connected with can review that tutor, and not until a day after connecting.
What's free on TutorUp, and what Pro adds
For parents, TutorUp is free to start. Without paying anything you can post requirements, browse every verified tutor near you with their photo, distance, experience, fee and rating, open two tutors' full profiles and request a demo from them, and see who has applied to your requirement.
TutorUp Pro lets you open every profile, request a demo from any tutor, read applicants' notes, accept any application and chat with tutors in the app. It costs ₹899 for 3 months or ₹2,999 for 12 months; the first 50 subscribers pay ₹599 or ₹1,999 and keep that price when they renew. Pro renews automatically; cancel any time in the app and it runs to the end of the period you paid for. The pricing page has the details.
Tuition fees are separate: you pay the tutor directly, and TutorUp never takes a cut.
Boards, classes and subjects covered
TutorUp covers CBSE, ICSE and ISC, Cambridge IGCSE, IB and the Maharashtra State Board (SSC and HSC), from Nursery to Class 12.
Subjects run from phonics and reading, handwriting and EVS for younger children, through Maths, Science, English, Hindi and Social Studies, to Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Computer Science for older students, plus commerce subjects: Economics, Accountancy and Business Studies.
Home tutors across Pune's neighbourhoods
In long-settled neighbourhoods like Kothrud and Shivajinagar and Deccan, most families are choosing between State Board and CBSE, and much of the housing is older cooperative societies where entry means a watchman's register rather than an app. In the newer high-rise belts of Baner, Wakad and Kharadi, large gated societies are the norm and evening traffic decides who can realistically reach you.
Pimpri-Chinchwad, which grew up around the industries of Pimpri, Chinchwad and Bhosari, has long-settled neighbourhoods such as Nigdi, Akurdi and Chinchwad itself. In the south and south-east, Sinhagad Road and Hadapsar and Magarpatta stretch a long way, so a tutor at one end can be a long ride from the other.
