A Science home tutor in Pune helps most when the subject changes shape: from EVS in primary school, to one Science subject in middle school, to what is really Physics, Chemistry and Biology by Class 9. This page explains how each board organises Science, where students lose marks, and how to choose and use a tutor.
How school Science changes from Class 1 to Class 10
In the primary classes, most boards teach EVS (Environmental Studies), which mixes early science with the world around the child: plants, animals, water, the body, the neighbourhood. In most schools, Science becomes its own subject from Class 6, with the first experiments, units and simple formulas.
Class 9 is the big step. Science suddenly needs Maths for numericals, precise definitions and labelled diagrams all at once, and children who coasted through middle school often start to struggle here. A tutor who sees this coming can build those three skills before the first unit test, not after it.
Is Science one subject or three? It depends on the board
| Board | Class 9-10 Science | What it means for tuition |
|---|---|---|
| CBSE | One integrated subject combining Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth Science; 80 theory marks plus 20 internal assessment | One tutor can usually cover it, if they are equally sure of all three strands |
| Maharashtra State Board (SSC) | Science and Technology, Part 1 and Part 2; in the Class 10 SSC exam these are two papers on different days | Balbharati textbooks; semi-English students learn it in English |
| ICSE | Physics, Chemistry and Biology taught separately, and examined as three separate Science papers | Closer to three subjects; one tutor or two, depending on strengths |
| IGCSE | Usually separate Cambridge Biology, Chemistry and Physics (some schools offer Combined or Co-ordinated Sciences instead), each at Core or Extended, with a practical test or a written Alternative to Practical | The tutor must know your child's tier and which practical paper they sit |
| IB MYP | Sciences taught through inquiry and investigations, and assessed against the MYP's published criteria | Help with investigation write-ups and the criteria, not just content |
CBSE has also redesigned Class 9 Science for 2026-27. Every student takes the common course, and students can opt for an extra Science Advanced paper of 25 marks, which CBSE plans to examine in Class 10 from 2027-28 and will not add to the overall total. Older siblings' notes may not match the new Class 9 syllabus, so ask a tutor whether they have taught it yet. Our CBSE page has more.
Where students lose marks in Class 9 and 10 Science
In CBSE's 2026-27 Class 10 Science syllabus, chemical substances and the world of living each carry 25 of the 80 theory marks, effects of current 13, natural phenomena 12 and natural resources 5. The same syllabus lists a few topics, including periodic classification of elements, evolution, and electric motors and generators, that are taught but assessed only in school, not in the year-end board exam. Ask the school how it will assess them.
Marks rarely go missing for lack of reading. They go in four predictable places:
- Balancing equations and writing formulas, which depend on valency learnt in Class 9
- Ray diagrams for mirrors and lenses, where a missing arrow or label costs marks
- Numericals in motion and electricity, where units and rearranging a formula trip students up
- Biology diagrams and definitions, which need the exact terms, not a rough idea
A tutor who spends part of every session on one of these, instead of reading the chapter aloud, helps far more than extra pages of notes.
One Science tutor, or separate subject tutors?
Up to Class 8, one Science tutor is enough, and many families pair it with Maths. In Class 9 and 10 it depends on the board and on your child. For CBSE and SSC, one tutor strong across all three strands works well. For ICSE or IGCSE Extended, or if your child is fine in Biology but stuck on Physics numericals, a tutor for the weak subject may be better value than one for everything.
From Class 11, Science splits for good. Our Physics, Chemistry and Biology pages, linked alongside, cover what changes at that level.
What a good Science tutor does
- Asks your child to explain a process in their own words before moving on
- Draws diagrams with your child, then has them redraw from memory
- Does numericals every week, not only before tests
- Uses everyday things at home, like a torch, a magnet or a glass of water, to show an idea
- Knows your school's internal assessment and helps with the practical file without writing it for your child
- Uses the board textbook's wording for definitions
How Science tuition sessions usually run
Two or three sessions a week of about an hour suits most Class 6 to 10 students. Rotate the strands so no part of the syllabus goes untouched for weeks, end each chapter with a short written test, and keep one notebook just for diagrams and definitions to revise from. Homework should include drawing and recall, not only reading.
When to start Science home tuition
The end of Class 8 or the start of Class 9 is the most useful moment, because that is where Science gets heavier and, for CBSE students, the syllabus is new in 2026-27. For Class 10 board students, start at the beginning of the session rather than after the prelims.
The Maharashtra board has announced tentative SSC written exam dates of 15 February to 11 March 2027, with practicals and internal assessment before that; check the board's latest circular. Our SSC board exam guide and CBSE Class 10 preparation guide set out a plan.
Finding a Science tutor near you in Pune
When you post a requirement, give the board and class, name the strand that worries your child most, and mention if they study in a semi-English school, so a tutor who can explain in Marathi as well as English can apply. Offer two or three evening or weekend slots, and if you live in a gated society, sort out how the tutor will get in: a regular visitor entry on MyGate or NoBrokerHood saves a call at the gate every time. Families in Hadapsar, Pimple Saudagar and across Pune can browse verified Science tutors nearby and request a demo.
