Home tuition fees in Pune vary widely. Rates publicly listed by tutors and tuition bureaus commonly fall around ₹250 to ₹700 an hour for school subjects, with some experienced tutors listing ₹1,000 or more, and monthly packages run from a few thousand rupees for a primary-school child to ₹10,000 or more for Class 11-12 science. IB and IGCSE rates spread wider still. These are indicative third-party figures, not TutorUp data: what you actually pay depends on your child's class, board and subjects, how often the tutor comes and how far they travel.

This guide sets out those ranges by class, explains what pushes a fee up or down, and lists the norms worth agreeing before the first class, so you neither overpay nor lose a good tutor by underpaying.

Home tuition rates in Pune by class

The table below pulls together rates publicly listed for one-to-one tuition in Pune - individual tutors' rates on UrbanPro's Pune class pages and the rate charts Pune tuition bureaus publish, checked in October 2026 - cross-checked against GharPeShiksha's 2026 home tuition fee guide. Treat it as a rough map rather than a price list: individual quotes regularly fall outside these ranges in both directions.

Indicative, publicly listed rates for one-to-one home tuition in Pune (UrbanPro Pune listings and bureau rate charts, October 2026). Approximate, varying widely, and not TutorUp data. Monthly figures assume a few sessions a week.
Class bandPer hour (approx.)Per month (approx.)What moves it up or down
Nursery-Class 5₹200-₹500₹2,500-₹6,000All subjects or one; phonics and handwriting specialists; days per week
Class 6-8₹250-₹600₹3,500-₹8,000Number of subjects; Maths and Science can cost more than languages
Class 9-10₹300-₹900₹4,000-₹12,000Board exam year; the board; extra sessions before exams
Class 11-12₹350-₹1,200₹7,000-₹18,000 or moreScience subjects, often priced per subject; entrance-exam focus
IB and IGCSE (any class)Mostly ₹400-₹1,000; some list up to ₹2,000Varies too much to band; compare per hourSubject and level; coursework support; the tutor's experience with the syllabus

Two patterns show up across the listings: fees rise with the class, and the top end climbs for board-exam years and for IB and IGCSE. For what each curriculum asks of a tutor, see our pages on IB, IGCSE, CBSE and the Maharashtra State Board.

Per hour or per month: how home tutors in Pune charge

Most Pune home tutors quote one of two ways. Per hour (or per session) is common for older students, single subjects, short-term exam help, and IB or IGCSE tutoring. Per month is common for younger children and regular all-subject help, usually for a fixed number of days a week.

To compare the two, turn every quote into a cost per hour actually taught. ₹6,000 a month for three one-hour sessions a week is about 13 sessions, or roughly ₹460 an hour. ₹6,000 a month for five 90-minute sessions a week is closer to ₹185 an hour. Same headline number, very different value.

In Class 11 and 12, tutors often price per subject. Physics, Chemistry and Maths from one tutor may cost less than three separate specialists, or more, depending on the tutor. Ask for the per-subject breakdown either way.

What drives a home tutor's charges up or down

  • Experience. A school teacher with years of board-exam experience usually charges more than a college student. Higher isn't automatically better: a younger tutor who explains clearly can be exactly right for a primary-school child.
  • Board. Listed rates for IB and IGCSE tutoring spread wider than for CBSE, ICSE or State Board (SSC/HSC), and the top end is higher, partly because fewer tutors know those syllabuses and their coursework well.
  • Exam years. Class 10 and Class 12 often carry a premium, and some tutors charge extra for added sessions in the weeks before the boards.
  • Subjects. Maths and the sciences can cost more than languages, especially from Class 9 up. Several subjects from one tutor can work out cheaper per subject.
  • Days per week and session length. More sessions mean a higher monthly total, though the hourly rate may come down.
  • Distance and travel time. At peak hour, Pune traffic averaged around 15 km/h in TomTom's 2025 Traffic Index, so even a short trip eats into a tutor's evening. A tutor coming from far away may price that time in, or be tempted to drop you later for a closer student.
  • One-to-one or group. Siblings, or two or three children from the same society sharing a session, usually pay less each. The trade-off is less individual attention.
  • Timing. Early-evening weekday slots tend to be the most sought after, so some tutors may be more flexible on fee for a weekend or afternoon slot.

Norms to agree before the first class

Most fee disagreements come from things nobody said out loud at the start. Agree these at the demo stage, and put them in a WhatsApp message you can both refer back to.

  • Demo class. Many tutors and bureaus offer the first demo class free, but not all do. Ask before it happens.
  • Advance payment. Paying for the month ahead is common. Avoid paying several months upfront to an individual tutor before you've seen a few weeks of classes.
  • Payment method and record. UPI or a bank transfer leaves a record; note which month each payment covers.
  • Notice period. Agree how much notice either side gives before stopping, such as two weeks, and whether the last month is charged in full or pro rata.
  • Holidays. Decide whether fees pause for Diwali, the summer holidays or your family's travel, and what happens in the weeks after exams.
  • Missed classes. If the tutor cancels, agree on a make-up session. If you cancel at short notice, agree whether it still counts.
  • Extra sessions. Agree the rate for added sessions before exams, so it isn't a surprise in February.
  • Fee revisions. Ask when the fee might change; the start of a new academic year is the usual point.

Our list of questions to ask a home tutor covers these alongside teaching approach and availability.

How to avoid overpaying, and underpaying

Overpaying usually means paying for prestige rather than fit, paying for months upfront and then stopping, or paying an exam-year premium for a Class 6 child who needs patience more than board strategy. If you go through a tuition bureau, some collect the fee themselves and keep a service charge, so ask how much of what you pay reaches the tutor.

Underpaying is the less obvious risk. A fee far below what other tutors nearby ask can mean a tutor who cancels often, takes on too many students, or leaves mid-year for better-paid work. Home tuition only works if the same person turns up week after week for months, and a fair fee is part of what keeps them.

It helps to see the fee from the tutor's side. A one-hour session with 25 minutes of travel each way takes nearly two hours of a tutor's evening, and the window after school only fits a few sessions a day. That is why a tutor 2 km away can often charge less than one 8 km away and still earn fairly.

  • Get two or three quotes for the same class, subjects and days per week, so you compare like with like.
  • Convert each quote to a cost per hour taught.
  • Start with one month rather than a term, and review after 6 to 8 weeks.
  • Pay for consistency: a tutor close to home who rarely cancels is often worth a little more than a cheaper one across the city.

Finding a tutor at the right fee

Put your budget in the requirement you post, so tutors who apply know what you have in mind, and compare the fees on their profiles side by side. Matching is by real distance, so the closest tutors come first, which also means less travel built into the fee. Our guide on how to choose a home tutor covers the rest of the decision, and you can browse by neighbourhood on the Pune home tutors page.

Common questions

How much does a home tutor cost per month in Pune?

It varies widely with the class, the subjects and how often the tutor comes. Publicly listed rates suggest a few thousand rupees a month for a primary-school child and ₹10,000 or more for Class 11-12 science, with IB and IGCSE varying even more. Treat these as indicative and get two or three quotes for your child's exact needs.

What is the home tuition rate per hour in Pune?

Publicly listed rates for school subjects commonly fall around ₹250 to ₹700 an hour, rising for senior classes and exam years. Experienced specialists, and some IB and IGCSE tutors, list ₹1,000 or more. Compare quotes on the same basis, per hour actually taught.

Is it normal to pay home tuition fees in advance?

Paying for the month ahead is common in Pune. Paying several months upfront to an individual tutor before you've seen how classes go is riskier. Agree the payment date and notice period at the start.

Do I have to pay the tutor during holidays?

It depends on what you agree. Some tutors pause fees for long breaks like the summer holidays; others charge a reduced or full fee to hold your slot. Settle this before classes start so neither side is surprised.

Do IB and IGCSE tutors charge more?

Often, at the top end. Publicly listed IGCSE rates in Pune range more widely than for other boards, with some tutors asking up to ₹2,000 an hour, partly because fewer tutors know these syllabuses well and students often need coursework help too. Ask which IB or IGCSE subjects and levels a tutor has taught, and how recently.

Does TutorUp take a share of the tuition fee?

No. You agree the fee with the tutor and pay them directly, and TutorUp takes no commission. TutorUp is free to start for parents, with an optional Pro subscription for those who want to open every profile and chat in the app.
