In this guide
To balance Class 12 boards and entrance exams, treat them as one syllabus with two kinds of exam: learn each chapter properly for the board paper first, then add the extra depth and speed that JEE, NEET or MHT-CET need. Plan backwards from the 2027 exam calendar, keep a protected block before the boards for board-style writing, and keep the Class 12 marks your child needs for admission in view all year.
This guide is written for parents of Class 12 science students, mainly on CBSE and the Maharashtra State Board (HSC), who are juggling Class 12 board exam and JEE or NEET preparation. Most of it applies to ISC too. One note on scope: tutors on TutorUp teach school subjects and board preparation at home. They are not a JEE or NEET coaching institute, and the section on home tutors below explains where one actually fits.
Do Class 12 board marks matter for JEE, NEET and MHT-CET?
Yes. Your child can sit JEE Main whatever their board marks, but admission rules look at Class 12 results. These are the 2026 rules; each body publishes a fresh brochure every year.
| Route | What Class 12 needs | Check each year at |
|---|---|---|
| IITs (JEE Advanced) and NITs, IIITs and other institutes through JoSAA | Pass with physics and maths (and chemistry for IITs), plus either 75% aggregate (65% for SC and ST, and for PwD at IITs) or a top 20 percentile place on your board | jeeadv.ac.in and josaa.nic.in |
| NEET UG (MBBS, BDS) | Pass physics, chemistry, biology and English, with at least 50% across physics, chemistry and biology for General category (40% for SC, ST and OBC; 45% for General PwD) | neet.nta.nic.in |
| MHT-CET (Maharashtra engineering and pharmacy admissions) | Anyone passing or appearing in Class 12 can sit the test; admission has needed at least 45% in the qualifying group of subjects (40% for reserved-category candidates from Maharashtra) | cetcell.mahacet.org |
The 75% for IITs is worked out on five subjects: physics, chemistry, maths, one language and one other subject. That means English, or whichever language your child takes, counts. A strong science student who neglects English can fall short of 75% without seeing it coming.
How much do Class 12 boards and JEE, NEET or MHT-CET overlap?
A lot. JEE Main and NEET are built on Class 11 and Class 12 physics, chemistry, maths and biology, with NCERT textbooks as the common base. MHT-CET is set on the Maharashtra State Board syllabus, and the CET Cell's syllabus document gives about 20% of the weightage to selected Class 11 chapters and 80% to Class 12. It has no negative marking, but the CET Cell says the difficulty is on par with JEE Main, and with NEET for biology. The differences are where planning matters:
- Class 11 counts for entrance exams but not the boards. The Class 12 board paper tests Class 12 chapters, while JEE and NEET cover both years. Weak Class 11 topics need regular revision slots, not a last-minute rescue.
- Boards reward written explanation; entrance exams reward speed. Board papers give marks for steps, derivations, diagrams and neat working. JEE and NEET are timed, objective and carry negative marking; MHT-CET is timed and objective too.
- HSC and NCERT are not identical. For HSC students, MHT-CET and HSC preparation line up closely, but those aiming for JEE or NEET should read the NCERT chapters alongside state textbooks. CBSE students sitting MHT-CET should check the state syllabus for topics they have not covered.
- Subjects outside the overlap still count. English and the fifth subject feed the 75% aggregate, and they need steady, if lighter, attention.
A term-by-term Class 12 plan for 2026-27
If you are reading this in October, your child is near the start of the second phase. That is fine: most of the plan still applies, and the next three months matter most.
April to September 2026: build the syllabus
- Learn chapters in the order school teaches them, so board work and entrance work reinforce each other.
- For each chapter: textbook exercises first, then board-style questions, then entrance-level questions.
- Keep one weekly slot for Class 11 revision and one fixed rest slot.
October to December 2026: finish, then start full papers
- Aim to finish the syllabus by December, then move to full-length practice: timed entrance mocks and complete board papers.
- Watch for JEE Main 2027 registration on the NTA website, and later for MHT-CET registration.
- Complete practical journals, project files and investigatory work now, not in January.
- Many schools hold pre-boards (prelims) in December or January. Treat them as a rehearsal for timing and presentation.
January to early February 2027: JEE Main, practicals and pre-boards
- JEE Main 2027 Session 1 is tentatively set for 22 to 24 and 28 to 30 January 2027, in the calendar NTA published in September 2026. Check NTA's latest notice before you plan around it.
- Maharashtra HSC practicals, orals and internal assessment are tentatively scheduled for 20 January to 6 February 2027; check the board's latest circular. CBSE practicals are usually held in January and early February, and your school will confirm dates.
- After Session 1, switch to board mode: past board papers, answer presentation and diagrams.
February to March 2027: board exams
- Maharashtra HSC written exams are tentatively scheduled for 8 February to 16 March 2027, as the board announced in September 2026; check the board's latest circular for the subject-wise timetable. CBSE Class 12 theory papers usually start in mid-February; check the final 2027 date sheet on cbse.gov.in.
- During board weeks, keep entrance work to short formula and concept revision. Use the gaps between papers for the next board paper.
April to May 2027: entrance exams
- JEE Main Session 2 has been held in April in recent years. NEET UG was held on 3 May in 2026.
- In 2026 the State CET Cell ran MHT-CET twice, in April and May, for both the PCM and PCB groups. Check whether 2027 follows the same pattern.
- Plan a short break between the boards and the entrance exams, then a final phase of timed papers.
Practicals and internal marks: the steady marks families forget
In physics, chemistry and biology, practicals and internal assessment carry around 30 of the 100 marks on both CBSE and HSC (check your board's current scheme). Missing practical sessions for coaching is a false saving.
- Practical journal complete and signed for every experiment
- Your child can explain each experiment's aim, readings and sources of error
- Viva questions practised aloud, not just read
- Project or investigatory file finished well before the practical exam
When to add a home tutor for a weak subject
A home tutor is worth it when the problem is specific. Coaching classes move at the pace of the batch and focus on the entrance exam; a tutor at home can slow down on one subject and on the way board answers are written. These are the usual signs:
- Marks in one subject sit well below the others, and the gap is not closing
- Your child follows the coaching lecture but cannot solve the textbook exercise alone
- Board answers lose marks on steps, diagrams or presentation even when the concept is right
- Chapters have piled up since term started and school has moved on
- English or the fifth subject is putting the 75% aggregate at risk
Ask any tutor which board they have taught recently and how they use past board papers. The subject pages for physics, chemistry, maths and biology cover what to look for, and our CBSE and Maharashtra State Board pages explain each board's exam pattern.
Timing matters too. A tutor who comes to your home saves a trip across Pune in evening traffic, which counts when coaching already takes several evenings a week. On TutorUp you can post a requirement naming the board, Class 12 and the one subject you need, such as HSC Chemistry, and tutors nearby can apply. A person on our team checks each tutor's identity before their profile goes live; it is not a background check, so read how verification works and meet the tutor first.
Avoiding burnout in Class 12
Class 12 often means school, coaching and self-study stacked into one long day. Extra hours stop helping once sleep goes: teenagers generally need around 8 to 10 hours, and memory and concentration suffer without it.
- Keep one fixed half-day a week with no study, and some daily movement.
- Phones out of the bedroom at night.
- Judge progress by trends across several mocks, not one bad score.
- Talk about more than one route to a good degree, so a single exam does not feel like everything.
If low mood, anxiety, sleep or appetite problems last more than a couple of weeks, or your child seems withdrawn or hopeless, talk to your doctor or the school counsellor.
