What online tutor jobs look like on TutorUp
Each job starts as a requirement: a parent describing what their child needs, and answering How should classes happen? with Online or Either is fine. If you teach online, your Home shows these families in an Online requirements list, from anywhere in India.
The list is ranked by fit to your own profile. A requirement in a class you teach counts most, then one on a board you teach, at one of your times, and with a budget that meets your fee. Among equally good fits the newest come first, because a family who posted this week is likelier to still be looking.
| Field | What it shows | Before you apply |
|---|---|---|
| Board | CBSE, ICSE, IGCSE, IB or State Board | Do you know this board's textbook, not just the subject? |
| Class | Anywhere from Nursery to Class 12 | Are you confident with the hardest chapters at this level? |
| Subjects | One subject, or several together such as Maths and Science | Can you teach all of them well over video? |
| Budget | What the family expects to pay each month | Is it close to your fee? |
| Timings | Morning, afternoon, evening or night | Does it fit your week, including your own exams or work? |
| Classes | Online, or online or at home | If it's either, could you also reach them, or is online the offer? |
| City | Where the family is, such as Online · Kolkata | If they're on a State Board outside Maharashtra, do you know its books? |
You can narrow the list by board, class, subject and time of day. Families can also find you in their own Online tutors list and request a demo, so your profile keeps working while you teach. How to get tuition students covers profiles, application notes and demo classes.
Teach at home, online or both
When you sign up, and later on your teaching profile, you answer How do you want to teach? You can change the answer any time.
- Online: online requirements from families anywhere in India, and families anywhere can find you.
- At students' homes: families near you, closest first, for home tuition in Pune and PCMC.
- Both: families near you who want home tuition, and an Online requirements list of families further away.
If you joined TutorUp before online classes, your profile was set to Both, so families across India can already find you. If you only teach at home, switch to At students' homes on your teaching profile. For home tuition in Pune and PCMC, see home tutor jobs in Pune.
Who can teach online on TutorUp
You need to be 18 or older, legally able to work as a private tutor in India, to have passed Class 12 at least, and to be confident in your subject at the level you'll teach. TutorUp doesn't ask for a B.Ed or a degree. The work suits:
- College students teaching school subjects they're strong in, between lectures and with no commute.
- Homemakers who can teach from home in the afternoon or evening.
- Teachers, including retired school teachers and coaching-class faculty.
- Working professionals teaching on weekday evenings or weekend mornings.
- Tutors in smaller towns, where there may be few families nearby looking for your subject or board.
If you teach at a school now, check your contract and your school's rules first. Section 28 of the Right to Education Act, 2009 bars the teachers it covers from private tuition, and schools may have their own rules too.
Getting verified
Before families can see your profile, a person on the TutorUp team checks who you are, either on a short video call or by reviewing both sides of a government photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, driving licence or passport) and a selfie you capture in the app. There is no automatic pass.
You also add your latest qualification: how far you've studied, and a photo or PDF of your latest mark sheet or degree certificate. Class 12 passed is the minimum. Parents don't see the document; it's for the person checking you.
If something is sent back, you're told why and can try again. Until you're verified you can browse requirements with the family's details hidden, but can't apply or accept a demo request. How TutorUp verifies tutors explains what is and isn't checked.
No commission, no lead fees
Creating a profile, getting verified, seeing online requirements and applying cost tutors nothing, and TutorUp takes no cut of what families pay you. Anyone who asks you to pay to be given a student isn't acting for TutorUp, so report it.
Setting your fee for online classes
Your profile shows one monthly fee, per student, and each requirement shows the family's monthly budget. The final figure, the number of classes a month and the missed-class rule are agreed between you and each family. TutorUp doesn't set fees.
With no travel, you might charge less online, or fit more students into an evening. You might charge the same, because the preparation and the hour are the same. Either is fair; what matters is that the family knows before the first class. If you teach both ways and charge differently, say so in your bio and when you apply. How much to charge for home tuition covers what drives a fair rate.
Families pay you directly, by UPI or bank transfer. TutorUp never handles tuition money, so it can't chase an unpaid fee for you: put what you agree, including the due date, in writing.
What you need to teach online
- A stable internet connection, with mobile data as a backup if your broadband drops.
- A quiet place with light on your face and a plain background behind you.
- A device with a camera. A laptop is easiest; a tablet or a phone on a stand works too.
- Earphones or a headset with a microphone, so the child hears you and not the room.
- A way to show working, such as a shared whiteboard app, a tablet and stylus, or a second phone pointed at paper. Use whichever tool you prefer.
- A video service the family can use, such as Google Meet, Zoom or WhatsApp video. TutorUp doesn't run the call: you and the family agree the link in chat.
Before your first demo, do a test call with a friend at the time of day you'll teach, and decide what you'll do if the connection fails, such as moving to a phone call for the rest of the hour.
Running a good online class
- Use the demo to diagnose. Find one thing the child is missing, and check the setup works at their end too.
- Ask to see the working. Have the child hold their notebook to the camera, so you see where a step goes wrong, not just the answer.
- Keep younger children's classes short and active, and ask that a parent stays nearby.
- Talk to the parent, not just the child. A short update every few weeks tells them it's working.
- Keep to the time you agreed. Without a commute it's easy to run over, and families plan their evening around the slot.
Staying safe, and keeping it professional
Families aren't ID-checked the way tutors are, so use your own judgement with a new one. TutorUp shows families the area you teach from, never your address, and phone numbers stay hidden until you've connected in the app.
- Keep messages with the parent, not the child, and in the TutorUp chat until you're ready to share a number.
- Send the class link to a parent, and ask that an adult is nearby for younger children.
- Don't record a class unless the parent agrees, and agree who keeps the recording.
- Never pay to be given a student. A request for a "registration fee" is a red flag.
- If something feels wrong, end the call. Report it in the app or to [email protected], and report anything that happened online at cybercrime.gov.in.
Freelance work, not a job with TutorUp
TutorUp doesn't employ tutors, pay salaries, assign students or direct how you teach. You're self-employed: you choose the families, hours, fee and number of students, with no salary slip, paid leave or PF, and you're responsible for the tax on what you earn. Our terms set out what TutorUp is and isn't.
