A Chemistry home tutor in Pune earns their place in two moments: the mole concept at the start of Class 11, and the organic chemistry that follows. This page explains why Chemistry is really three kinds of learning, where students get stuck from Class 9 to 12, how boards differ and how a tutor should structure sessions.
Physical, inorganic, organic: three subjects in one
| Branch | What it involves | How it should be taught |
|---|---|---|
| Physical chemistry | Mole concept, atomic structure, thermodynamics, equilibrium, electrochemistry, kinetics | Like Physics: numericals, units and plenty of graded problems |
| Inorganic chemistry | Periodic trends, bonding, d- and f-block elements, coordination compounds | Patterns first, then exceptions, with regular recall rather than one-time reading |
| Organic chemistry | Naming compounds, reaction mechanisms, converting one compound into another | Why each reaction happens, then practice on chains of conversions |
A student can enjoy one branch and dread another, so ask a tutor to work out which branch is weak before planning anything.
Where students get stuck in Chemistry, class by class
- Class 9: atoms and molecules, valency and writing formulas. A shaky grip here causes trouble every year after.
- Class 10: balancing equations, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, and carbon compounds. In CBSE's 2026-27 Class 10 Science paper, the chemical substances unit alone carries 25 of the 80 theory marks.
- Class 11: the first chapter, Some Basic Concepts of Chemistry, brings in the mole concept and stoichiometry, which return in almost every physical chemistry chapter after it. The year ends with the basics of organic chemistry and hydrocarbons, together 21 of the 70 CBSE theory marks.
- Class 12: organic chemistry dominates. The five organic units, from haloalkanes to biomolecules, carry 33 of the 70 CBSE theory marks in 2026-27.
How Chemistry differs by board
- CBSE: NCERT textbooks are prescribed, so a tutor should cover the NCERT text and exercises thoroughly before adding extra material. Class 11 and 12 have a 70-mark theory paper and 30 marks of practical work, including volumetric analysis (titration) and salt analysis. More on our CBSE page.
- Maharashtra State Board: Chemistry is part of Science and Technology in Class 9 and 10, and a separate HSC subject with Balbharati textbooks in Class 11 and 12. See our State Board page.
- ICSE and ISC: Chemistry is taught separately from Class 9 and is one of the three Science papers in the ICSE exam, then ISC Chemistry in Class 11 and 12.
- IGCSE (Cambridge 0620): Core or Extended, with a multiple-choice paper, a theory paper, and either a practical test or a written Alternative to Practical.
- IB: Diploma Programme Chemistry at standard or higher level, with an internally assessed scientific investigation your child plans and writes up.
What to look for in a Chemistry tutor
- Teaches the mole concept through ratios and units, not a formula to plug numbers into
- Draws reaction mechanisms with arrows and asks your child why each step happens
- Uses short, frequent recall for inorganic facts instead of asking your child to reread notes
- Knows the practical exam: titration, salt analysis and the record your child must submit
- Can explain why an answer is right, not just which answer is right
- Works from the current syllabus, since chapters have been dropped and moved in recent years
How Chemistry tuition sessions usually run
A balanced week touches all three branches: one set of physical chemistry numericals, a short inorganic recall quiz, and one organic topic with conversion practice. Two sessions a week of about an hour often works for Class 9 and 10; Class 11 and 12 students usually need three, with longer ones before exams.
Your child should keep a single sheet of named reactions and reagents, added to as the year goes on, and a separate list of every numerical they got wrong and why. Both make revision in the final weeks far shorter.
Chemistry home tuition, NEET, JEE and MHT-CET
Chemistry, like Physics, is tested in JEE Main, NEET UG and both MHT-CET groups, so a weak Class 11 base hurts whichever path your child takes. TutorUp is for school tuition, not entrance coaching: a home tutor makes sure the board syllabus is properly understood, which entrance preparation builds on, but it is not a substitute for entrance-level practice. Our guide to Class 12 boards and entrance exams explains how to plan for both.
When to start Chemistry tuition
The summer before Class 11 is a good time for a few weeks of revision on atoms, valency and equations, so the mole concept doesn't land on a weak base. Otherwise, start in the first month of Class 11. For Class 12, start before the organic units begin.
For Class 10, start at the beginning of the session, since chemical reactions open the CBSE Class 10 Science syllabus. Our CBSE Class 10 preparation guide sets out a plan for the year.
Finding a Chemistry tutor near you in Pune
When you post a requirement, say which branch worries your child most and whether you want help with the practical record. If your child is in junior college with long days, a weekend morning session can work better than a tired late evening. Families in Viman Nagar and across Pune can browse verified Chemistry tutors nearby and request a demo.
