Commerce tutors in Pune teach the three core Class 11-12 subjects: Accountancy, Economics and Business Studies, together or one at a time. Each needs a different kind of help - Accountancy is practice, Economics is concepts, diagrams and numericals, and Business Studies is structured answers to case questions - so it is worth knowing which subject is actually the problem before you hire.
Commerce subjects in Class 11 and 12, by board
| Subject | Class 11 | Class 12 |
|---|---|---|
| Accountancy (055) | Basics through journal, ledger and trial balance to financial statements of a sole proprietorship, with simple GST entries (CBSE keeps GST to Class 11) | Partnership firms (36 marks) and companies (24); then either analysis of financial statements and cash flow, or computerised accounting |
| Economics (030) | Statistics for Economics and Introductory Microeconomics | Introductory Macroeconomics and Indian Economic Development |
| Business Studies (054) | Foundations of business (forms of organisation, business services) and finance and trade (sources of finance, internal and international trade) | Principles and functions of management (50 marks), and business finance and marketing (30) |
Maharashtra HSC students cover similar ground under their own subject names - Book-Keeping and Accountancy, Economics, and Organisation of Commerce and Management - with State Board textbooks and question patterns. In Maharashtra, Class 11 and 12 are usually done at a junior college, where classes can be large, which is one reason families look for one-to-one help at home. ISC, IGCSE and IB students have related subjects under different names and syllabuses; tell the tutor exactly which syllabus your child follows.
Accountancy is a practice subject
Students rarely struggle with Accountancy because the ideas are hard. They struggle because the problems are long and multi-step, and one wrong adjustment throws out the whole balance sheet. The partnership chapters in Class 12 - admission, retirement and dissolution of partners - are where this shows most.
A good Accountancy tutor works on:
- Formats until they are automatic: journal, ledger, capital accounts, balance sheet
- Working notes, set out so an examiner can follow them and give method marks
- Finding their own errors when an account doesn't balance, instead of starting again
- Volume of practice - enough solved problems that adjustments stop being surprises
- Timed questions closer to exams, because these papers are long
Economics and Business Studies: concepts, diagrams and case questions
Economics
Class 11 Economics opens with statistics, which catches out students who dropped maths. Microeconomics and Macroeconomics then rely on diagrams (demand and supply, consumer equilibrium, income determination) and short numericals, such as national income or the multiplier. A tutor should make your child draw and explain each diagram, not just copy it. Indian Economic Development rewards connecting textbook ideas to current examples.
Business Studies
Business Studies looks easy because it reads like common sense, and that is exactly how marks are lost. Case-based questions ask students to spot which principle or function a situation shows and to justify it in the right terms. A tutor helps your child structure answers to the marks available and use real examples - a Pune startup, a local shop, a company your child has heard of - to make concepts stick.
Where CA Foundation fits in
If your child is thinking about chartered accountancy, it helps to know how it fits. Under ICAI's current scheme, a student who has passed Class 10 can register for the CA Foundation course, but can only sit the Foundation exam after appearing for their Class 12 board exams. Its four papers are Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics.
Class 11-12 Accountancy and Economics build the base for Foundation, but a school tutor is not CA coaching, and board marks come first. Check icai.org for current registration rules and exam dates.
What to look for in a commerce tutor
- Teaches the specific subject your child needs - one strong Accountancy tutor often beats one tutor covering all three
- Knows whether your child is on CBSE, ISC or HSC, and uses that board's textbooks and sample papers
- Solves problems with your child rather than dictating notes
- Checks practice work and explains where marks were lost
- Can help plan the project work without doing it for your child
- Can explain in Hindi or Marathi if that helps your child
Before a tutor's profile appears on TutorUp, a person on the team checks them on a short call or by reviewing a photo ID and a selfie. That confirms who they are; it is not a police or background check and not a judgement of teaching quality. See how verification works, and take a demo before committing.
How commerce tuition usually runs
Class 11 and 12 timetables are packed, so many families choose two or three sessions a week of 60 to 90 minutes, often in the evening or at weekends. Accountancy usually needs the most time. Starting in the first term of Class 11 is far easier than catching up in Class 12, when partnership and company accounts arrive together with pre-boards.
For planning the Class 12 year around board exams and any entrance tests, see the guide to Class 12 boards and entrance exams.
