Schools, colleges and boards in Shivajinagar and Deccan
Within a short ride you will find both State Board and CBSE schools. Symbiosis Primary and Secondary School on Prabhat Road follows the Maharashtra State Board, for example, while Vikhe Patil Memorial School in Patrakar Nagar, off Senapati Bapat Road, is CBSE-affiliated up to Class 12. A tutor who knows your child's board and paper pattern well is worth more than one who says they teach "all boards" - see the State Board and CBSE pages for what each one expects.
The bigger local question comes after Class 10. For State Board students, Class 11 and 12 usually happen at a junior college, and Fergusson College on FC Road runs one. If your child is already juggling junior college and a coaching class, a home tutor helps most when it covers one specific gap, such as Physics numericals or Accountancy, rather than adding a third full timetable. Our guide to home tuition versus coaching classes explains how to split the load.
Getting a home tutor to Deccan or FC Road in the evening
Being central means tutors can reach you from many directions: from Kothrud along Karve Road, from Aundh and Pashan past the university, or from Pimpri-Chinchwad by metro. The hard part is usually the last few hundred metres. FC Road, JM Road and the lanes off Prabhat Road and Bhandarkar Road are busy in the evening, and a tutor on a two-wheeler can lose real time looking for somewhere to park.
Shivajinagar and Deccan sit on both metro lines. The Aqua Line from Vanaz stops at Garware College, Deccan Gymkhana and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Udyan, and the Purple Line, which runs from Pimpri-Chinchwad to Swargate, stops at Shivaji Nagar. A tutor who lives near either line can come without a vehicle at all. Ask at the demo how they plan to travel, and if they ride, tell them where they can park near your building.
Timing matters too. For a junior college student, an early-morning session before college or a later one after coaching may fit better than the usual 6pm slot. Check that the tutor can keep that slot for the whole year, not just the first month.
Prabhat Road lanes, FC Road noise and where to sit
Much of Model Colony, Prabhat Road and the Deccan lanes is older housing: bungalows and small apartment buildings rather than large townships with a visitor app. Prabhat Road addresses go by numbered lanes, so give a new tutor your lane number and a landmark, not just "Prabhat Road", and tell them where a two-wheeler can stand without blocking a gate.
Road noise is the other thing to plan for. If your flat faces FC Road, JM Road or Senapati Bapat Road, set up in the quietest room that is still a shared space, and use the same spot every session so your child settles quickly.
Choosing a home tutor in Shivajinagar: questions that matter here
With COEP, Fergusson College, BMCC and Savitribai Phule Pune University close by, some tutors you meet will be undergraduates or recent graduates. They can be very good, especially for younger children or a single subject. For a board year, though, ask how their own semester and exams will fit around your child's.
- Which board and class have you taught most recently?
- How will you get here - metro or two-wheeler - and where will you park?
- Will your timetable change when your own exams or semester start?
- Can you show me how you would set and mark a past board paper?
- Can you keep the same slot from now until the board exams?
